Centrally located north of College Street, east of Christie Street/Grace Street, south of Dupont Avenue and west of Avenue Road/Queen’s Park, the Annex is home to beautiful architecture, interesting people, excellent schools and a world-class university.

The area started out in the late 1800’s as an elite suburb for Torontonians looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In the 1920’s, however, the upper classes began to migrate north to more fashionable suburbs like Forest Hill and Lawrence Park, and the Annex went into a decline that saw many grand old structures turned into apartment buildings or rooming houses.

The education boom of the 1960’s helped increase the value of the homes around the University of Toronto, and the Annex once more became a fashionable place to live, attracting a wonderfully eclectic mix of professors, business people, artists, writers and students. It remains that way to this day; this is the place to be if you enjoy a vibrant mix of lifestyles, professions and ethnicities.

An evening’s walk will take you past some of the most spectacular architecture in Toronto – grand homes built in Victorian, Queen Anne and Romanesque styles dominate the tree-lined streets. You’ll also see homes that were built in the early part of the 20th century; lovely examples of Tudor, Georgian and English Cottage style abound. The West Annex – also known as Seaton Village – features smaller semi-detached Victorian style houses.
